Mondino de Liuzzi: First Public Dissection
Mondino's treatise was exceptionally influential, especially in Italy, which was the only part of Europe in which dissection became a standard, if infrequent, part of university medical instruction. -Medieval Science, Technology, and Medicine: An Encylcopedia In 1315, the first public dissection of a human body for medical teaching was carried out at the University of Bologna by the anatomist Mondino de Luzzi (1276-1326). |
Mondino de Liuzzi is often called the restorer of anatomy, and for a good reason. After his public dissections and publication of his anatomy book, dissections started to become a regular and accepted procedure in Italy. After years of a deep set cultural taboo, dissections were finally making a return.
